First Dance
Music & Lyrics by Anita Brown

May I have the First Dance...
And forever true romance?
If you want to, I will show you
How much I love you.

Everlasting and pure,
But a kiss is your allure.
If I hold you, you will know just
How much I need you.

I do recall your smile upon my first glance
Now that I’ve found you,
No one’s sweeter or true.

For the rest of our lives
We will always soar in flight
And we’ll have our memories of our First Dance.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND - Private Study & Clinics

Anita Brown is a seasoned, New York State Certified Music Teacher and Award-Winning Composer.

Holding Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education, she began teaching music in the schools while still in undergraduate school in 1983.

Her extensive career in Music Education included posts in New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York, which encompassed responsibilities in all aspects of elementary and secondary choral and instrumental music. From her extensive experience in curriculum development she designed hands-on experiences in performance and composition for both in-school and private students.

With her acceptance to the prestigious BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop, (NYC) in 1995, Brown turned her attention to her calling as a jazz composer. As a contributing composer through 2003, she received considerable recognition and acclaim as one of the workshop’s finest composers.

Ms. Brown lectures at high schools, universities and professional conferences, covering topics from career options to her creative process in composition.

As a private studio teacher she has been serving Rockland and Westchester County, NY and Bergen County, NJ families since 1985. Brown is considered a specialist for beginner and intermediate level students on several band instruments as well as piano and guitar.

Her management system workbook, “The Music Students’ Companion” (scroll down for further details) assists students and families with strategies for success through their musical journey and is praised by renowned music educator and author, Alphonse Tatarunis, Ed.D.

Brown enjoys incorporating elements of composition in her private lessons with young people. She believes it motivates them to become more engaged in their studies, reinforces their skills in reading notation with concrete activities and empowers them with tools for self-expression.

This approach is the basis for an original, supplementary curriculum, “The Composer Residency Project,” assisting the school music teacher in bringing students through the process of composition through age-appropriate activities and culminating in a guest residency with her.

Ms. Brown has taught coursework in Music Education at Concordia College, Bronxville, NY and Jazz Arranging at LIU Brooklyn, NY. Currently she is a member of the jazz faculty at both Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY and New Jersey City University, Jersey City, NY, teaching undergraduate and graduate studies in Jazz Composition & Arranging, respectively.

Her critically acclaimed, independently released CD, “27 EAST” and information about “The Composer Residency Project,” “The Music Student’s Companion” and other products are available via e-mail and telephone. Click on "Contact."

Anita is currently accepting students at the beginner and intermediate levels on piano, trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and music theory, in her Rockland home-studio and in your Westchester home (travel fee may apply).

NYSSMA participation is encouraged for all school-aged students residing in New York State.

Ms. Brown is also accepting intermediate to advanced students on piano, in jazz composition and arranging, college audition and/or portfolio preparation.

Serving college level composition students from New Jersey City University, Sarah Lawrence College and Temple University.

“Brown has been a familiar face in Edgemont as a substitute teacher and as a private music instructor in the Scarsdale area for many years. She has succeeded in bringing her love for jazz and composing into the classroom...”

--The Scarsdale Inquirer, June 18, 2004

“Our 9-year-old son began with Anita Brown only a short time ago. In that time, however, she has helped him make a smooth transition from his last teacher's materials to her own repertoire and system of teaching. She took the time to get to know his musical taste and interests and has tailored his lessons accordingly. He has particularly enjoyed learning about theory and composition, subjects his previous teachers did not cover. She is encouraging and supportive and ends each lesson by letting him choose fun stickers. We look forward to watching our son thrive in piano lessons with this bright, well-rounded and professional teacher.”

--The Professional-Musician-Parents of David, including a Jingle-Writing-Dad, June 16, 2008

"Anita has been teaching our daughter Piano for three years, and Clarinet for one. She looks forward to Tuesdays and her lesson and her conversations with Anita. She has always loved music, but Anita brings it out in her. Anita makes her work, and she makes sure she takes it seriously, which I think makes Anita a good teacher. We look forward to another year starting in September."

--The Kostroff Family, June 19, 2008

"Anita has been teaching my son piano for the last 4 years and alto saxophone for the last year. She is a terrific, highly skilled, and energetic teacher who takes such pride in her students. She has provided Matt with a great foundation in musical studies. Her philosophy works well for us - he is hungry to learn and her knowledge and integration of music theory into his lessons has made him truly appreciate music as well as become a fine player. Whether it's playing scales, practicing band music, working on mechanics for technique, or just playing his favorites, Matt enjoys all that she brings to him each week. She makes music fun (this year she even integrated some CD background music for Sax) and to me that is what it's all about. "

--The Rappaport Family, July 29, 2008

"I am a music teacher in the Rye Neck UFSD and have known Anita for more than 10 years. She is a brilliant composer, arranger, and music educator. Ms. Brown has taught both of my children private piano lessons and has given them both a superb well rounded start as musicians. Anita teaches with incredible creativity, variety, and energy that few others can match. Anita has influenced my own teaching and approach to working with students in a very positive way. I can't recommend her highly enough! Thank you Anita!"

--Craig Peterson, Rye Neck Public Schools, September 22, 2008

“My son and I have taken music lessons from Anita Brown for about 8 years. I have studied piano, while my son has studied trumpet as well as piano. Anita has an ability to communicate complex musical concepts in a straightforward and easy to understand way. She began teaching my son when he was very young and has been able to move from teaching him basics to addressing the integration of all the instruments he plays so he can see the interrelationships between them.

Because she has not only studied music but also composes and performs, Anita brings many talents to her lessons. This has added considerably to our musical education. As a result of her outside activities, Anita is able to add a whole different dimension to her instruction. We have been able to see her jazz orchestra play and my son has been able to take special lessons from notable trumpet players. Anita knows a whole community of musicians who inform her work and are a tremendous resource for her students.

For myself, learning piano with Anita has been a wonderful experience. I had taken lessons with several teachers before, but was never able to advance beyond rudimentary skills. With Anita, I have developed both a depth of understanding of music and music theory and the ability to apply that understanding to a wide range of musical genres.

It has been a pleasure studying with Anita and we look forward to continuing to do so.”

The Music Student's Companion - Management System - Free PDF

This is a management system designed to assist private music teachers, parents and students get the most out of their private music study. Beginning with space for lesson assignments and daily practice logs, this supplement to any method functions as a reference for elements of music theory, offers activity sheets in drawing musical characters and introduces young students to the process of composition.

For more information please e-mail me at ABrownJazzOrch@aol.com for pdf files of promotional materials.

"The Music Student's Companion really covers all the bases. It not only chronicles practice time but it assists the teacher in having an immediate way to present elementary theory concepts and to provide the student with the
opportunity for some musical creativity. I like the first few pages of The Companion where the student is given a plan of action for practice. I don't think
many private teachers ever cover such an important issue. The Music Student's Companion is really a management system for the teacher to monitor a student's progress and to show the student where s/he must concentrate his/her effort for
continued progress and to reward the student who is progressing favorably. Congrats.
-- Good stuff! Well thought through and above all, extremely functional."

--Al M.Tatarunis, Ed. D., Co-author of Teaching Music in Today's Secondary
Schools

"Working with Anita Brown was an incredible experience for my seventh and eighth grade band students. She is a talented composer/performer with patience, organization and pedagogical delivery of a master teacher. I was amazed to see how Anita's plan for individual instruction allowed every student, at every level to be successful. This project has changed the way my students look at and listen to music. They now have a new pathway for self-expression, which is one sure way to deter deviant behavior."

“Ms. Brown's system to teach composition to novices gives one the feeling that ANYBODY can compose music! Even lacking the skill to play an instrument well, using her method, my Third Grade students composed many pleasing melodies. This proved very rewarding for them. Their ownership in the final product was evident in their desire to hear their OWN music performed. The looks on their faces were priceless.

--Karen Bartholomew, K-4 Music Teacher

" 'Let's Compose!' was a positive experience for my students. Anita Brown brought composition down to a third grade level so that each student was able to write and play a tune. Every student participated in the lesson. Anita's enthusiasm was contagious, and the students became as excited about music as she was. I would recommend this program. 'Let's Compose!' sparked an interest in music in all students."
--Allison Stager , 3rd Grade Teacher

“The children loved composing their own music. They fed off of Ms. Brown's enthusiasm. The enjoyment of hearing what they composed was engaging."
--Carolyn Kerwin, 3rd Grade Teacher

“Since she taught me how to read music a little better, I’m looking forward to playing an instrument next year.”
--Geri, 3rd grade, flutophone

“I wasn’t interested in music, but when she taught me to write music, I got more interested.”
--Samantha, 3rd grade, flutophone

“Now that you’ve taught me to how to write music, maybe someday I’ll be a composer.”
--Jack, 3rd grade, flutophone
